New Program

Like everyone, I've been trying to figure out how to deal with the pandemic. Work has been more intense since the end of February. One thing that is most missed in my life is going to the gym. I've started and stopped walking and calisthenics workouts several times. Finally this past week I ran 4 days in a row.

First day a quarter mile. Second day some walk sprints. Third day 3/4 of a mile. Yesterday, August 2, I ran a mile. More like a job yet I was happy I did it. Sent a request to a friend who does marathons and they suggested getting the Couch to 5K app. So I typed that into YouTube and found several videos, including the one below (the "embed feature isn't working) so the one here

It's not the app, yet seems simple enough. If I'm feeling like I'm hurting, I can back off because like when am I doing some competing.

In this program you do strength and conditioning on Monday, rest Tuesday, and Thursday. Since I'm not going to the gym to lift I did the following today, all for 15 reps:
Pushups
Air Squats
Sit-ups
4-Count Jumping Jacks
4-Count Flutter Kicks.

If I follow the program in the video the rest will be:
Tomorrow and Thursday will be a rest day. I may repeat today's calisthenics.
Wednesday and Friday Warm up with walk 5 minutes, 5 sets of 3 minute walk and 1 minute run, 5 minute cool down
Sunday - Warm up with walk 5 minutes, 5 sets of 2.5 minute walk and 1.5 minute run, 5 minute cool down

Week 2
Monday calisthenics increased from last week, and Tuesday and Thursday by feel.
Wednesday - Warm up with walk 5 minutes, 5 sets of 2.5 minute walk and 1.5 minute run, 5 minute cool down
Friday - Warm up with walk 4 minutes, 5 sets of 2 minute walk and 2 minute run, 4 minute cool down
Sunday - Warm up 4 minutes, 3 sets of 2 minute walk and 2 minute run, then a 3 minute walk and a 6 minute run, then a 4 minute walk cool down

Week 3
Monday calisthenics increased from previous week, and Tuesday and Thursday by feel.
Wednesday - Warm up with walk 4 minutes, 6 sets of 2 minute walk and 2 minute run, 4 minute cool down
Friday - Warm up with walk 4 minutes, 6 sets of 1.5 minute walk and 2.5 minute run, 4 minute cool down
Sunday - 2 kilometers (I figured out how to change the MapMyRun app from miles to kilometers so that will help) All of the X kilometer runs have a walk warm up and cool down phase.

Week 4
Monday calisthenics increased from previous week, and Tuesday and Thursday by feel.
Wednesday - Warm up with 4 minute jog, 6 sets of 1.5 minute walk and 2.5 minute run, 4 minute cool down walk
Friday - Warm up with 4 minute jog, 6 sets of 1 minute walk and 3 minute run, 4 minute cool down walk
Sunday - 3 kilometers

Week 5
Monday calisthenics increased from previous week, and Tuesday and Thursday by feel.
Wednesday - Warm up with 5 minute jog, 4 sets of 1 minute walk and 5 minute run, 5 minute cool down walk
Friday - Warm up with 5 minute jog, 4 sets of 1 minute walk and 7 minute run, 5 minute cool down walk
Sunday - 4 kilometers

Week 6
Monday calisthenics increased from previous week, and Tuesday and Thursday by feel.
Wednesday - Warm up with 5 minute jog, 5 sets of 1 minute walk and 7 minute run, 5 minute cool down walk
Friday - Warm up with 5 minute jog, 3 sets of 1 minute walk and 10 minute run, 5 minute cool down walk
Sunday - 5 kilometers

I have an app called Intervals that I think can give me the intervals for all of these. Of course, if anything feels like I might hurt myself I can dial it back. Some of the jumps are larger than others and I can go more gradual if needed.

I need to get into the discipline of stretching more to stay safe for this.

It's good to be back and have a goal. It's also good not to have a solid deadline. I don't know how often there will be posts. Maybe daily, or summary of the week. Either way, it will be good. Will be great to get set up to lift again. Until then running is my jam. Being less active physically really was getting to my mood and energy.

All of the increases in the virus have been frustrating. So many things I do have people who do not wear masks. While I know I feel some pandemic fatigue, I really feel sorry for the medical workers who have to work COVID units.

I know some of you have not stopped at all, and others have struggled. Feel free to share!

And after I published this I found this video for 10 week approach. They also have different lenghts.

KEEP GRINDING!!!

Political Planning

Dear friends: I’m in grad school for a Masters in Public Health (MPH).

I needed to write about the “PRECEDE-PROCEED” health planning model with an example of my choice for a mid-term exam. I turned in something similar to this. This is a slightly tweaked version from my actual mid-term answer. Enjoy…

One example of a Precede-Proceed application may be an intervention upon the political-economy. There have been studies that suggest that the political-economy influences poverty and income inequities in a society. The political economy is influenced by participation in mass movements, unions, political parties, and electoral systems.

Let’s assume that a mass movement has appeared arguing against the concentration of political and economic power in the hands of a few people in society, maybe the top 1%. Health promotion workers being concerned about the prerequisites of health as mentioned in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion get together to see how they can form a health promotion program in support of this movement. They looked at how to work on healthy policy, supportive environments, community action, individual skills, and reorienting medical services.

The ultimate desired result as expressed by the mass movement is an equitable society. Health promotion workers offer to provide support on these issues and develop a “healthy society” intervention. Listening to participants of the movement, and also having conversations with people from non-profits, social justice organizations with paid staff, the few radical elected officials, and other public health workers the health promotion healthy society team will develop a menu of well-researched issues which contribute to the concentration of power and resources, or toward an equitable society (depending on how research has been done previously), then present that to the stakeholders.

They also look at previous research and decide to provide health education on how political systems, economics, racism, sexism, classism, party in power, unions, and mass movement influence health. There is plenty of scientific evidence that supports the idea that a strong “Left” movement will make a difference in income equity, health, and general quality of life. They take diffusion of innovation theory, theory of freeing, and other health models and apply it to create a strong impact for health education approaches.

Electoral systems, laws around ballot access for political parties, and laws concerning unionization are identified as barriers to implementation of a “healthy society” intervention. Laws around gathering in public are also identified as barriers. Banking laws, especially mortgage lending laws, are seen as huge barriers as well. General distrust of unions, political parties, politicians, and a weakening of democracy by the two-corporate-party system is another huge barrier and interventions specifically around this start getting planned to present back to the group.

This information is taken back to a movement “general assembly” where the information is shared and is then discussed over the course of several meetings. The assembly feels ownership sufficiently to engage the health promotion team with planning around increasing participation in the mass movement, and decreasing the concentration of power through mandatory public financing of all elections. The health promotion team delves back into the literature and begins to design specific interventions that will help get more people involved in the mass movement, and also looks at the process for changing electoral financing laws, and other issues prioritized.

The general assembly creates a “healthy society” working group that meets regularly. Process evaluation is done at every meeting. It is decided that that every three months there will be some impact evaluation. Since this is not a funded project the members of the movement ask the health promotion workers if they would invest time in training a variety of people in evaluation so that an outcome evaluation may be done at the end.

2/26/12

Wow - I didn't realize it had been this long since I've posted. I'm still trying to walk regularly and eat better. We had company that used the garage so I need to rearrange it again to work out. That will likely happen AFTER comprehensive exams in March.

May 12th and grad school is over! Don't know why I thought waiting until my kids were out of high school would make this easier...

Had my annual check up - levels are all either good or within acceptable ranges. Blood pressure has ranged from 143/81 to yesterday's 120/80! My computer is on the verge of giving out... If it can hang on until June I can let it rest!

Lots of stuff going on and I will try to post weekly to get the blog back on track!!!

Oh and a song for election season

9/1/11

Well it has been awhile since I posted. Things are tough. Dealing with mental health stuff in my household. I know a lot of providers and advocates and I'm still struggling to get help. Mostly I hear - "we feel sorry about your struggle." There really are few quality services out there right now. I can't imagine how hard this would be for someone totally unconnected.

Workout wise things are still progressing. My main lifts are at 100 pounds now. That feels good. For sake of time I'm going to drop from sets of 20 to sets of 10 after a week off. I really am taking this a lot slower than I thought I would. 12 workout weeks out of 13 is good. I don't feel less tired - but that's mostly because I actually don't get full nights of sleep.

My clothes feel better and people tell me I look different. I had a month of no caffeinated drinks until a really rough day last week. If I only have one or two of those a month that will be good. If I can let them go all together - that will be better.

Whoever the anonymous poster was on the previous post - thanks. And thanks to others for their comments as well. I usually hear about the blog in person. I'll run into someone and they say the blog encourages them. That's good to know.

Musically I've drawn some different energy to me. I think I may need to change my relationship to music until after graduate school. Feels hard but should be fine.

06/06/11

Wow - just a big ration of people being dumb in my direction or toward my family... Hope it is just a temporary spike and not a trend.

The workout this morning went well. I can tell I'm going to be a little sore in different places. It was good to get started again.

It is interesting to blog about my individual exercise routines given how much time I work on Critical Health Literacy - which is understanding how capitalism, racism, classism, sexism, etc. impact health. Much different but there are times that without my personal exercise it is hard to deal with the broader issues.

4/24/11

Well it is Easter and while I didn't get all 40 days for jazz drill practice in I did do most. And I think it is helping. For post lent I will work on one jazz song a week and Esteban Jordan tunes.

For jazz I think I'll start with C Jam Blues, and for the Esteban Jordan songs I'll work on pieces of Le Seguiremos, Adios Amor, Cumbia Con Salsa, La Mucura and Coronelas. I'll review and tighten up parts I know and then next week start working on parts I don't have down. And any extra time will go to continue the jazz drills. I'm also figuring out how I would create a similar system for Chicano/conjunto acordeon study.

That's the long-term goal - to work on something I don't know every week.

For those who like to know I have been working on scale and chord patterns along with different pre-recorded rhythm sections. Nothing complicated, just something I wasn't taught earlier. So I follow along with the recording and either play the chord, or a scale that fits the chord for the cycle of fifths on the dominant 7th, ii-V-I cadences, extended chords, or song changes.

The jazz songs for the next few months will be C Jam Blues, Now's The Time, Killer Joe, Blue Bossa, Footprints, Song for My Father, Autumn Leaves, Freddie Freeloader, St. Thomas, and Blue Train. I'll figure out the order as I go. There is a jazz "play along" that has the heads and one round of sample solo. I figure learning that will continue to help me hear the changes and have some of the song in my fingers.

Health wise, I'm getting better. Having to deal with some financial stuff and the health at the same times sucks but that's just what has to be dealt with. I'm walking more and moving better. And next week I'll be "Walking to Cure Capitalism"! (I figure that's healthy!)

Still walking more. It seems to be helping.

I'm also working on drills from a jazz perspective. I think that is helping as well. I'm not getting faster, but sounding a little cleaner.

3/17/11

Work was great today. Just finished my second draft of my mid-term assignments. I related the work of Eugene V. Debs as an organizer and public health outcomes. I will work on it some more over the weekend. Sticks to the idea that equity improves health outcomes!

I have been working on some jazz drills and feeling like "geeze I should have learned these in middle school." Then I noticed on Tuesday during rehearsal and jamming with some friends that I was playing a bit differently. Decent stuff for a couple of weeks of work. I guess I'll have to keep it up!

It has been hard to keep up with current events. Japan, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Wisconsin, etc.

12/4/10

I'm very proud of my children. They worked on the Youth Building Health Communities project and held an Albuquerque Youth Health Summit. They did a great job of working with other youth and facilitating different parts of the meeting.

Can't wait until the notes and follow up comes in.

Get Happy with 20 Minutes of this!I can vouch for this approach.

It was a good reminder to get this in my email box. Day full of meetings and I'm glad I had a few minutes here and there go get some walking in.

11/28/10

I was starting to feel disillusioned with grad school. Then I found a great article about diabetes and poverty. It talked about focusing on the social structures and "politics of poverty" instead of individual behavioral change.

Then there is another document on how heart disease is impacted more by poverty, social exclusion and chronic stress than by smoking and diet. Though it means a greater amount of work, it also means that I'm not crazy. If you get a chance, read Social Justice is Good for our Hearts.

Sept. 30, 2010

Well, work is nice and hectic. And it is hard to make school academics match up with work realities all of the time, but at least I can spend time with super smart people!

Over the weekend I learned how to use Audacity to do a voice over for a school presentation. But I did it with music! Learned a good chunk and could probably become a podcaster now if I wanted to. Maybe once a month do a short rant or review of a song or something. We'll see.

More importantly I've started to do some jumping jacks and walking more. I haven't started with the weights. Mostly just scheduling - familia, homework, organizing, and playing music. Lots of challenging stuff.

I did figure out that if I do want to learn more about Esteban Jordan's music I'll have to start from the bottom and work my way up. Since I only review songs for the bands and don't go into them super deep - hope they aren't upset. I keep trying to improve, but much of the music doesn't drive me.

So back to EJ... if I REALLY want to understand it and get a grasp I'll have to be super slow. I'll start with the lyrics of a song. After that go to the intro and work out the bass as close as I can. Then go back to the beginning of the intro and work it out on the guitar. THEN go back and work out the acordeón. I know I'll work on the acordeón all along, but seeing how the harmony works along with the interesting rhythm changes will help it all make more sense and also allow me to arrange and compose with a different feel.

Wish me luck!

Happiness Makeover

I originally thought about complaining about my project partner who is upset that I don't have a cell phone so she can call me. It's a freakin online program! I send her an email and wait 3 days for a response, but she wants to lecture me about a cell phone... Of course there's more, but anyway.... I saw an article and did a little follow up below that will hopefully set me on a more constructive course.

As much as I appreciate the following advice I have to say it seems funny when someone calls themselves a "thought leader." Maybe that's a good goal. MJ Ryan has this advice to improve your happiness:

Ask yourself three questions at the end of the day, What am I thankful for today? What did I enjoy today? And what am I satisfied about today? And you can't say 'nothing.' You have to come up with something.

I wonder if she would admit that the following piece of news has any impact. The US Census is finding that the gap between the rich and the poor is at its widest. What doesn't get mentioned enough in this is that it also means that the "steps" between each level are also likely wider. So if you imagine a ladder - once the rungs between levels were closer together. Now those are wider apart. It's not just the "poor" losing out, its all of us!

8/31/10

Up doing homework. Good thing is that I noticed I was standing up for about 30 minutes before feeling uncomfortable. Time to get some weights in!

Been able to practice a little... going to have to be patient until the Masters is over.

Attending the 40th Anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium this weekend in East LA. Very good and very interesting. Lots to consider.

Family is a little stressful right now. But overall things are good and should get better.

Prayers for Esteban Jordan

Today has been very hectic, lots of meetings and all of that. Really good stuff and real bummers.

The busy, well that's usual. I passed my Research Methods class, but with a lower grade than I hoped. I guess I should have pushed harder for make up work. Oh, well. Not that bad, but not fun.

The hardest part is probably that I happened to do an uncommon log in to MySpace and found out that Esteban Jordan is ill. This is an obvious drag for me.

This last week I started speaking David who plays accordion for FYLG and he wants to put together an Accordion Fest. One day in Santa and one day in Burque. He wants to do Scalos or something "classy" - I'm hoping for something more working-class, but he's organizing.

So he wants to showcase someone in each genre. I promoted Miguelito for mariachi and Jimmy Baca or John Mancha for conjunto. He wanted me to play too. So I was trying to think of what songs to do. I figured if I had three songs I would do Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, and Esteban Jordan.

Last night I was driving home from rehearsal with Mezcla Latina. I was listening to a greatest hits collection of Los Relampagos. And I was thinking to myself, "he said 3-5 songs, so there are tons of great songs to do." I was thinking I could do one of two things - work on 5 Esteban Jordan songs, or one song from different Chicano/Mexicano acordeon styles. So I made a CD to listen to and go over. Most of the songs were Esteban Jordan. So I was leaning that way.

Just funny how coincidence works that way.

The best part of the day was delivering a presentation on Health Equity. My professor is out sick and missed it, my two bosses didn't show up. A couple of Chicano elected officials, or their reps missed it, but the turnout was perfect. Had a good response and discussion. I think it will really help me in my future work.

7/28/10

This education thing is very interesting. I think holistically. So the break things down into super detail is very odd to my brain.

If I'm going to do a thesis I'll have to see how to make that make sense. It might make sense to skip the thesis (officially) and just work on different learning projects for each semester. Too bad they didn't have a research methods class for social epi or social determinants. I'll have to make that up for myself as I go along.

The sharp focus approach may be useful. I'm still trying to figure out if this ends up being like "thinking in silos"...

7/20/10

Busy is not the best word for whatever the hell is going on with my schedule.

Just too many things going on.

I'm also trying to get in to my chiro. What I think will be good about school is my learning how to provide more analysis to our arguments for social determinants of health work. I wish research class would give us more step by step practice. It seems that the assumption is that we had undergraduate research classes. Well, I didn't. Even if I had it was a long time ago.

Catching up will be a slight drag in some ways. But thinking hard about how to add to the data that poverty, housing, participation, etc. impact health, here in Bernalillo County, New Mexico will be worth it.

Right Freakin' On! 5/11/10

don't forget the issue of birthright citizenship. There are few countries in the world that adhere to this policy and most (if not all) are in the Western Hemisphere. I would have liked to see a reference or two in the first page, but, overall, your work read so well, I did not make any comments in the paper. It is evident that you worked very hard on this! Congratulations on a job well done.

That is the comment on my final paper from my Health System Management and Design professor. Overall my grade in that class was an A-! My paper was on medical service delivery to immigrant communities. A 96 - pretty damn good! Funny, I just realized that school and work are the places I feel I can brag on myself. Interesting...

It also looks like I passed my Epidemiology class as well. So a good job and I'll chill for a few days on the heavy reading.

Next step is working on an independent study so I can digest a huge amount of World Health Organization (WHO). I like getting input and feedback and I also like to follow my own rabbit holes. This independent study should help me strengthen my foundation for this area.

5/10/10

Things are pretty good. The whole familia is involved taking care of Chuyito - at least the immediate family. He's doing great.

We had a neighborhood association meeting and had some conflict around "affordable" housing, density, and services. There are a couple of people who say that services are the cause of any problems we have. One neighbor was good at pointing out we need to stay focused on the positive and what we want to keep. And she said she wanted to keep the diverse people that make up her neighborhood! I was very pleased.

She later sent me a link to a Latino USA story on the Chavez Ravine and I like the pictures.

I was flattered this past week. I was nominated and awarded a Public Health Advocate Award by the NM Public Health Association. And the group I facilitate - the Southeast Heights Health Coalition also received the same award as an organization. Very nice.

Hanging out with Chuyito and the rest of the family today.

Workouts coming soon.

And there needs to be more thoughtful work around immigration reform... it has to include substance abuse prevention/treatment, labor law, and other social services.
