11/24/09

So much to think about.

One is how isolation works. Noticing that during these hard times, my circle of people is more isolated than usual. I think this is partially due to the economy and some disillusionment with politics.

I know lots of people thought that the 60 Dem votes would lead to major changes. It seems that "progressive" doesn't mean much change after all. It IS an improvement, but seems like people expected more. This next year will be a tough fight for community power vs. corporate power.

As for money, it was good getting an inheritance. It was from my grandmother passing in 1992, so it was a long time coming. But it helped me pay off some debt. People have a hard time thinking about me being in debt because I have a well paying job. What they don't consider is that I spent many years making in the low 20s. During that time I incurred debt for my dad's funeral. I also have debt from my mom's funeral, my father-in-law's funeral, and my other grandmother's funeral.

I know many people don't take those kinds of debts on, but I do. It was tough, and whenever we are on one income it gets tight, even with my good income usually being stable. So I think that I am finally in a good place and stay even with all of the college debt my daughter and I are racking up. I'm trying to encourage my son and wife to also go back to school.

Arthritis? Another way to deal with it

Here's a pill free way to deal with arthritis!

Well things have been crazy lately, and I hope they calm down. I would like to start lifting again, but with school and all of that don't know...

But maybe we'll have real health care reform someday. Maybe when there are 70 Democrats in the Senate? Cause it doesn't look like 60 was enough. Until then we'll have to figure out ways for people to stay alive and healthy without health insurance.

Some Closure

Joey is on stage in the middle. It was very sad, beyond what I can even consider as a parent.
It was also tough watching how hard it was on the young guys. And sad that violence is such a part of their lives. There was a sick normalcy to it.
The funeral service did bring some closure and hopefully people can start healing. It just reminds me of why I chose the work I do.
I wish the family and friends the best. D.E.P. Joey

D.E.P. Joey

A young brother who was friends with my kids and had stayed at my place several times was found beaten and stabbed outside of his NE Heights apartment. I hope they get to the bottom of this.

I was at an organizing training when my niece sent me a text asking if I remembered Joey. I was hoping it wasn't bad news. It reminds me of why I bother with organizing in the first place.

11/12/09

Yesterday got me thinking about heroes. As that is usually our war theme...

So what about the people who fight against companies that pollute our environment, or sell products that kill people, or or try to stop pointless wars? I think that's who we should honor and we need to find a good way to do it big.

On the personal side I requested my two courses for next semester, and Epidemiology course, and a Services Design course. Should be interesting.

Oh and Lou Dobbs quit CNN!

Veteran's Day Thoughts

As a veteran I always wonder about these holidays that we have in the US. I mean they are really more about war than the individuals, no matter what we say. We want war to be OK, and it stands to reason that we tell people who may go that they are special.

Yet, vets have a higher unemployment rate than the rest of the population. Vets are homeless much higher than the general population. They have higher substance abuse rates, domestic violence rates, and other problems.

And we assume that they at least have VA health care. Then why did 2,266 vets die last year because they don't have health insurance?

Things are crazy busy. Got a lower score on my stats exam than last time. Trying to just deal with it being OK to be wherever I'm at. I push really hard and sometimes that's not helpful.

My back pain is different lately. Not 24/7 but still daily. I need to go pay my membership to the gym. They changed the code on the door. (Long story)

Anyway. I'm still doing OK overall. Still proud of the kiddos. My daughter seems to be doing OK in college and a mural that my son worked on at the South Valley Economic Development Center is being dedicated this Saturday at 2PM. Unfortunately I'm in a training way on the other side of town.

I still can't believe that a party with a huge majority and in charge of the administration can't get decent health reform...

Got a song list for recording, so the priority will be tightening up these songs for recording.

Hope the weekend is great for everyone. I'm still hoping we'll have universal health care in my lifetime.

Polkas!

I'm working on an Esteban Jordan polka - A La Heavy, and will be reviewing La Polkaplex, and another of his that I sorta learned awhile back.

Then I'll be working on the following two polkas and some other songs. Paul is letting me sing and i'll have to work out playing and singing. And then learning some cumbias. Working on Tristes Redcuerdos, Hechale un Quinto al Piano, Ojos de Pancha, Pa' Todo el Año, Probablemente Ya, El Tejano (Chicano) Enamorado, My Toot Toot, Chicano Truck Driving Man, el Manicero, Mi Cafetal, El Caballito, etc...

Also noticed that "smacking" is no longer blogging... Too bad. She said she started because she was inspired by this blog. Hope she's well.

11/04/09

Things are tight but good. On our syllabus through my online courses there was no indication of fall break so when my assignment pages weren't being loaded into our "blackboard" I was getting worried. Then I checked today and there was all of this work due on Wednesday!

Then I went to the calendar and realized that it is for next Wednesday... Pinche profesores...

Work just feels like it is going too fast and dragging at the same time. Music is going OK. Not enough paid gigs. Looks like I'll need to figure out a few extra bucks here and there.

Either way, I'm going to try acupuncture and see how that goes. Feeling much better, except not sleeping well.

And nice that some people who don't comment here send a text or email every once in awhile.

Gracias!!!!
