Did 5 minutes on the bike last night. My hip feels better. But I figure I'll work up slowly. So I'll work at doing 5 minutes a day, then 5 minutes twice a day. Then 10 and 5, etc.
No lifting for this week. I'm going to try and increase painfully slowly so that I don't hurt myself anymore.
Next week, I'll start lifting again. Moderate and then work up to heavy. I'm going to go for strength for the first 3 months of the year.

Working on taking back control of my life, my household, etc. I've spent a lot of time trying to make other people happy, and that doesn't always go well.
The fun trick will be balancing all of that and still being supportive of people getting what they want also. But I think the kids need more structure and that I need more free space at home (physically as well as otherwise). So clearing up clutter will be a priority, even over practicing music, until New Year's Eve. Then I'll see where things are at.

Machi posted another point of view on "healthiest" state rankings. It's interesting, you can read it here. Just shows that there is much more to deal with. And there's not enough about colonization, historical trauma and other disparity issues included. Maybe there should be a ranking of the state with the most disparities...
This would be very good before the next presidential elections. As it has been pointed out by many people that realistic assessments of NM aren't backed by the Gov'ner. Just the happy-happy ones, which he takes credit for!

Nobel laureate: Poverty fight essential
Economist Muhammad Yunus accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on Sunday for his breakthrough program to lift the poor through tiny loans, saying he hoped the award would inspire "bold initiatives" to eradicate a problem at the root of terrorism.
Yunus, a 66-year-old Bangladeshi, shared the award with his Grameen Bank, which for more than two decades has helped impoverished people start businesses by providing small, usually unsecured loans known as microcredit.
"We must address the root causes of terrorism to end it for all time," Yunus told hundreds of guests at City Hall in Oslo, Norway. "I believe putting resources into improving the lives of poor people is a better strategy than spending it on guns."
In his speech, Yunus also warned about the potential costs of globalization without help for the world's poor.
"To me, globalization is like a hundred-lane highway crisscrossing the world," Yunus said. "If it is a free-for-all highway, its lanes will be taken over by the giant trucks from powerful economies. Bangladeshi rickshaws will be thrown off the highway."
"Rule of 'strongest takes it all' must be replaced by rules that ensure that the poorest have a place and piece of the action, without being elbowed out by the strong," he said.

So much going on in my head right now. I went to a co-counseling workshop this weekend and just got reminded about how hard I am on myself and how it is impacting me. I think there is something to work on here, but how to do it in a way that doesn't play into my making it a life and death struggle type of feeling will be the key!
The good thing is that there were a few people who haven't seen me for awhile. While one was able to say that she noticed my pansa had gotten bigger, she said overall I look better. Most people that commented said they liked how my upper body changed.

I did go to the University of New Mexico to check on the music department. Dr. Dalby thought checking out CNM would be better to start with. Then I could think about really going into the hassle of the University Program.
He kept talking about all of the hassles they put you through and that most of their classes are during the day, etc. He might be right. But for a couple of semesters to be at CNM may be good. I'm going to try the Fundamentals of Music class. It may sound easy, but I'm sure it will be good to get back into the school groove with.
For now, I'm working on my timing and ear training. Next week, I'll try the 15 minutes per instrument minimum and see how that goes!

NM Health Drops to 40th!
New Mexico's health ranking slipped from 38th to 40th in the nation based on a broad range of indicators, such as occupational fatalities, immunization coverage and high-school graduation rates, according to a report released Tuesday.
"There are multiple factors that are holding back the state," said Dr. Archelle Georgiou, a medical adviser to United Health Foundation, which produced the study. The foundation is an independent not-for-profit organization funded by the health care company United Health Group, for which Georgiou also works as a vice president.
New Mexico is one of the states that regressed the most in the past year. The high-school graduation rate decreased 6 percent. Occupational deaths went up as did the prevalence of smoking and the percentage of children in poverty. Meanwhile, immunization rates for children dropped a few notches.
Tobacco use in New Mexico about matches the national average, but is "still something to really improve on," Georgiou said.

I'd hate to be a politician trying to become president while the state health goes down like this while I was governing. Could be bad! But if you have a well-oiled PR machine then it would probably be forgotten by the next election. Unless, of course, people keep repeating it.

That Knee Ache May Start at Your Hip
Got knee pain? Get hip to the real cause.
In a recent study, 6 weeks of daily exercises that strengthened and stretched the hips helped ease painful knees. So if knee pain has you swearing like a sailor every time you climb stairs, squat, or kneel, it may be time to shore up those hip muscles. (Exercises)
Knees aren't just bony knobs that punctuate the middle of your leg. Each is a complex hinge that moves in only one direction: backward. As long as all the structures that make up the knee joint are stable, you don't even think about it. But let any part of the surrounding leg -- the thighbone or calf bone, the tendons and muscles that surround the knee, or the shock-absorbing cartilage in the joint -- shift out of place and your knees will let you know about it. A weak hip may be all it takes to trigger that shift. For example, weak abductor and adductor muscles -- your outer and inner hip muscles -- may allow your knee to rotate too far, which makes you yell ouch . . . or worse.
Of course, weak hip muscles are just one possible cause of knee pain. So if you're hurting when you walk, jump, squat, or sit for a while, see your doctor for an evaluation right away.
Feed Your Brain, Save Your Memory
What's a really memorable pairing? No, not wine and food pairings. Vitamin pairings. And the answer is B12 and B9.
Seems older people who are short on vitamin B12 have more trouble recalling certain words, and low levels of B9 (folate) may add to the brain drain. What to do? Seek out yet another great pairing: salmon and beans, brimming in B12 and folate, respectively.
Getting enough Bs to keep your mind sharp takes effort. Take the RealAge daily recommendation of 25 micrograms of B12, for instance. Even one serving of salmon and one of tuna a day, plus an egg, a cup of milk, and a cup of yogurt -- all good B12 sources -- won't get you there. To guard against a shortfall, especially if you're a vegetarian, it's smart to take a supplement.
But folate (B9) is found in lots of fortified foods, including cereals, breads, and pastas, so you may get plenty in your diet. Don't take a folate supplement unless your doctor tests your B12 levels. High levels of folate may mask a B12 deficiency.
Food is your best source of most nutrients. Here's a tasty recipe that will deliver both B12 and folate in each delicious spoonful.
Fennel-Crusted Salmon on White Beans
5 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1 bulb fennel, halved, cored and thinly sliced, plus 1 tablespoon chopped fennel fronds
2 15-ounce cans white beans, rinsed
2 medium tomatoes, diced
1/3 cup white wine
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, divided
1 tablespoon fennel seeds
1 pound salmon fillet, skin removed, cut into 2 portions
1. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced fennel; cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, about 6 minutes. Stir in the beans, tomatoes, and wine. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes begin to break down, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a bowl; stir in the chopped fennel fronds, mustard, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cover to keep warm.
2. Meanwhile, combine the fennel seeds and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl; sprinkle evenly on both sides of the salmon.
3. Wipe out the pan. Add the remaining 3 teaspoons of oil and heat over high heat until shimmering but not smoking. Add the salmon, skinned-side up, and cook until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Turn the salmon over, cover and remove from the heat. Let stand until the salmon finishes cooking off the heat, 3 to 5 minutes more. Transfer the salmon to a cutting board and flake with a fork. Serve on top of the warm bean mixture.
Per serving: 306 calories; 13 g fat (2 g sat, 6 g mono); 28 g carbohydrate; 25 g protein; 9 g fiber; 467 mg sodium.
