5/20/10

It's been a nice couple of days. Getting ready and dealing with funeral stuff isn't that fun. But it is good to be able to help out.

My Tio's age probably messes with me a lot. I just always assumed he was older.

Celebrating birthdays has been nice. Reminds you that things keep moving.

Well the City Council voted 5/4 to NOT boycott Arizona. We'll see what they do with Mayor Berry's proposal to cut back the idea of being an immigrant friendly city.

Lots of work to do!

Thanks to MR and Machi for the kudos for my school work and recent awards.

Right Freakin' On! 5/11/10

don't forget the issue of birthright citizenship. There are few countries in the world that adhere to this policy and most (if not all) are in the Western Hemisphere. I would have liked to see a reference or two in the first page, but, overall, your work read so well, I did not make any comments in the paper. It is evident that you worked very hard on this! Congratulations on a job well done.

That is the comment on my final paper from my Health System Management and Design professor. Overall my grade in that class was an A-! My paper was on medical service delivery to immigrant communities. A 96 - pretty damn good! Funny, I just realized that school and work are the places I feel I can brag on myself. Interesting...

It also looks like I passed my Epidemiology class as well. So a good job and I'll chill for a few days on the heavy reading.

Next step is working on an independent study so I can digest a huge amount of World Health Organization (WHO). I like getting input and feedback and I also like to follow my own rabbit holes. This independent study should help me strengthen my foundation for this area.

5/10/10

Things are pretty good. The whole familia is involved taking care of Chuyito - at least the immediate family. He's doing great.

We had a neighborhood association meeting and had some conflict around "affordable" housing, density, and services. There are a couple of people who say that services are the cause of any problems we have. One neighbor was good at pointing out we need to stay focused on the positive and what we want to keep. And she said she wanted to keep the diverse people that make up her neighborhood! I was very pleased.

She later sent me a link to a Latino USA story on the Chavez Ravine and I like the pictures.

I was flattered this past week. I was nominated and awarded a Public Health Advocate Award by the NM Public Health Association. And the group I facilitate - the Southeast Heights Health Coalition also received the same award as an organization. Very nice.

Hanging out with Chuyito and the rest of the family today.

Workouts coming soon.

And there needs to be more thoughtful work around immigration reform... it has to include substance abuse prevention/treatment, labor law, and other social services.
