June 26, 2008

Yoga twice a day helps a lot. Getting my car out of the shop tomorrow. I'll keep it parked in a safe place for a week or two.

My son wants to buy the car, and I think we'll get it to him. We'll have to figure out some details with insurance and all of that first.

I didn't sleep well last night because I was excited about running a meeting today. It went well. If I'm caught up tomorrow I'll lift some before a gig at the airport.

Much love to all of you who have been reading regularly and been supportive!!! It is appreciated. I know this has been a thin blog lately, but hopefully it will pick up.

Health Care Costs June 25, 08

I love how politicians want to keep lowering taxes by telling us it puts more money in our pockets. But for many it just means things like higher utility bills, higher tuition, and more expensive medical costs.

Below was pulled from an email I received.

For example, the total annual medical spending required to cover an average low-income uninsured adult with Medicaid for a full year would have been $3,084 in 2005, while covering that person with private health insurance instead would have cost $3,899, or about 26 percent more. More dramatically, if the uninsured person were covered by Medicaid, the annual out-of-pocket expenses for that person – including payments for deductibles, copayments and coinsurance, and noncovered services, but not premiums – would be $109, as compared to $771, or about 600 percent more, under private health insurance.

More on Happiness

Denmark again...

June 18, 08

It's been good having support from friends. Family stuff has been interesting. I asked one of my compadres if his son could hook up the electricity for our driveway security. He was a little snippy about not hearing enough from his hijada, and gave me a very weak "I'll ask him" with the how busy things are. So much for family networks.

I'll keep trying. Many friends have been good and I'll keep going that route. Even though that's a stretch too in our over busy society.

I'm feeling really tired today. But also hopeful. Interesting combination! Hopefully I don't get too whiney.

June 17, 08

My son started CNM yesterday which was good. He was just driving at my nerves though and I lost it at him. Luckily he and I both chilled. Hopefully I'll figure out better ways to destress than at my family.

Yoga is today and I'm really hoping I'll follow through and lift later this week!

* * *
La Raza Unida will be doing a "Food For Thought: Health in Our Communities" event showing the Unnatural Causes documentary for August 29th and I walked in the PRIDE parade. That is always fun. My leg is not doing too bad considering.

The street is a little quiet. Nice...

I don't see the deal for the red text... oh, there it is!

Escaleras de La Carcel

For those days when we think we have it rough...

June 12, 2008

Things are stable, which isn't the greatest, but at least OK. I'm not sleeping well again. I'll work on that tonight.

My next safety goal is getting good lighting over the driveway, and maybe the back yard. Then figuring out a camera set up. I'm being persistent with my City Councilor and the police. There's a lot more police traffic. Hopefully enough to slow some things down, but obviously not enough to keep track of the 130 households on "the block" (actually two blocks).

But my neighbors are also starting to step up. I want to get back with my friends and such who actually call or show up. Then I have people who ask how I'm doing and stop asking when I tell them how hard it is to have my limp and have to walk to the car and most of the people who tell me they are my "friends" haven't been around.

There are people who are just my friends through action. I appreciate that everyone is doing their best, but I could still use more help. I think it is true of me too - most people can handle something being hard for about a week. We all have enough of our own stuff to be able to help long-term. And I am having a hard time with the continual stuff that keeps coming my way and it feels like I'm not much help to anyone else.

Anyway, even with all of that I feel relatively OK. I'm clear that things won't stay this way forever, but longer than I want.

John as Prince

In case you ever wondered....

June 9, 08

Weekend was slow. Gotta figure out getting my kids hanging back out at home. My son will hopefully come in time to apply for a job tomorrow.

Overall things are good. Just got this bummer with the crappy kids across the street...

I also hope that someday the Air America DJs will talk about issues instead of personalities.... SO sick of it already.

June, 05, 08

Walking to work regularly now, but still having to stop along the way to stretch.

I really need to figure out exercising again and yoga really is helpful at this point.

I'm also trying to learn about housing redevelopment and figuring out how to encourage the city to rebuild problem areas. Much won't happen to reduce crime until the job market gets better. It would be great if we just had a living wage and maybe a four day work week. That would probably provide as much of a boost to the economy as much as the freakin stimulus!

But hey, gotta take what we get and run with it!!! Maybe if we grew our own tomatoes we wouldn't have to worry about salmonella.

Tim and Eleanor Win!

Tim Keller spanked Senator Scrum!! Eleanor Chavez won as well!

Hopefully now we'll start to see progressives move toward democracy by opening up the election process and making it easy to be part of a union!

June, 02, 2008

Calmer weekend. Kids will be home tonight and tomorrow for their Mom's birthday. Hopefully everything stays calm. No vehicle at home at this point. Too tired of dealing with the slow police reaction time and then having to get windows fixed.

Wish me luck!

Bo Diddly Passed On... Might have to go to jam night this week... Will need to figure out a ride.
